Přes práh
Interior as an Art in Contemporary Czech Design
15/9 – 1/12/2013
GASK – Gallery of the Central Bohemian Region, Kutná Hora
„Přes práh“ (Over the threshold) opens the present question of ambiguity of the definition of art and design in the theme of the Czech interior. It presents the works of young designers who cross the borders of their fields – design of furniture, glass, porcelain, graphic design or photography. It captures moments crossing the borders of art.
The concept of the exhibition brings us into the environment of classic camping tents linked to the atmosphere of youth, recklessness and something ephemeral. This camping tent with a wooden substructure, a hundred-year-old invention of Czech scouts, works here as a universal interior – a sterile space that can be easily transformed and adapted for every inhabitant.
The exhibition follows the footsteps of objects, which turn the universal surroundings into an intimate expression of a personality. It asks about the author’s motivation and the oscillation between applied and free art, whether through the production process itself, the approach towards the limits of materials and forms, the story hidden in the background or simple resignation on its basic interest – function. A polemic against the value of the mass production, in contrast with the uniqueness of the handmade. It points out the never-ending border of fantasy of the presented designers and inspires even the visitors to cross it.
“Přes práh” subsequently follows the German project “Come-in,” presently on show at the GASK – Gallery of the Central Bohemian Region – and which shows interior design as a medium in contemporary German art. The Czech exhibition enters the imaginary interior from the other side: it introduces the aspects of free art in the creations of Czech designers. The fragile question of defining both fields is not answered directly. It mirrors one of its possibilities.
The project was prepared by the creative team of designSUPERMARKET, which stands behind the festival of contemporary design of the same name, featured in Prague. designSUPERMARKET functions as a presentation platform for the upcoming generation of Czech designers. Its first independent exhibition is presented in this fashion.
